I believe that this image describes just how lost Cabeza DE Vaca was. He was know for traveling to the present day America, and learning the Native American cultures. Who's not to say that he had a motive be hind this whole opperation? He touched the lands of the Americas way before Christopher Cholumbus, but was that his plan all along? For some one to have at least a little knowledge of the other side of the world. Some one had to go before Columbus to make sure if " the coast was clear." So, as time progress, and technology got a little more advanced who to say that there's not going to be another brave soul to travel agian.
As Vaca points in to the direction in which he wished to go, look at his fellow me and see how they are curious yet happy at what they see. could it be gold? Could it be food? Could it be land? Is it just a man who's eyes are full of greed? look at there attire, there "weapons" and see just how much they are in need. Reguardless if they/he were greed they needed things to survive.
He says in his journal that "God our Lord eventually please to bring me where i am now." However look at the cross in which he holds. See that the cross that Gods son Jesus laid his body on in bombarded with a head of a cow. Is he trying to play God himself? Because he is the leader, he did lead men to new and better lands? But he is still not a God. Did he introduce him self to the Indains as a God. (because they do believe in multipule Gods.) So that he can gain the wealth that he so desired?
